Report
If I could give this zero stars, I would. I worked at Alpha Accountants for a month and, unfortunately I had a very negative experience. The owner initially agreed to sign my apprenticeship paperwork but later refused, stating that he did not believe I had one year of experiencedespite my college confirming my previous work history and me providing a workplace reference - he sat behind his desk smirking.
As a result, I lost my apprenticeship. I also attended college once a week as part of my training. However, whenever college was closed (e.g., during Christmas holidays), I was expected to come into work. I was required to do overtime every single day without pay, and when I left at 5:30 PM on two occasions with prior approval, I was reprimanded for it. Although my manager showed me previous employee he had trained, the company was hesitant to provide me with similar training opportunities.
They expressed concerns that I might leave once trained, which resulted in a lack of support for my professional development. The firm imposed unrealistic expectations regarding task completion, often requiring work to be finished within impractical timeframes. On one occasion, I was assigned a large task and informed them I would finish it on the following day. However, near the end of that same day, I was suddenly told it needed to be finished immediately, despite the actual deadline being much later.
I had to work under pressure on outdated computers that frequently crashed, which impacted efficiency and accuracy. Once completed, my manager did not review the task until the evening before the deadline, yet I was still reprimanded for errors caused by the rushed process. One day, a woman came into the office as she was in the wrong area and appeared very worried and scared. I took the initiative to direct her to the correct bus she needed to catch. Later, my manager asked who had come in and why, and I explained the situation.
My manager was not very pleased with my actions. I worked on a three-month probation period, expecting a fair opportunity for long-term employment. However, I was not placed on the payroll during my time at the company, which raised serious concerns about fair employment practices. In the UK, employees are entitled to at least the National Minimum Wage from their first day, and employers must process pay correctly through payroll.
It became clear that I was hired mainly to cover a busy period rather than being considered for a permanent role. Unfortunately, there was no discussion of contract terms or proper employment arrangements. Transparency in hiring is important, and I encourage future applicants to ensure they have clear agreements on pay and employment conditions before starting work.
Overall, I found the work environment unprofessional and unsupportive. Based on my experience, I would not recommend this company to those looking for structured training and fair treatment
